5 Powerful Reasons Why Influencers Should Start a Blog Right Now
Dec 13, 2017
A blog can be a very powerful tool for influencers. If you're an influencer who hasn't started a blog yet or don’t know if you should, this post is for you.
A blog is a content marketing tool that many influencers can use to attract followers, brands and customers.
Here are 5 powerful reasons why influencers should start a blog right now!
1. A blog is a great way to establish yourself as a resource or expert in your niche.
Let’s say you’re looking for a solution to a problem or doing some research.
Chances are, you’re going to go online to Google or a search engine and type in something like, “how to start a blog.”
Then, you’ll get search results that are automatically chosen by the search engine based on an algorithm.
From there, you’ll probably visit the first few sites on the page and perhaps you’ll find one that really helps you because it has a lot of useful information, maybe there’s a few videos and you like the style of writing on the site.
After reading a few of the blog posts on one site, you realize that the person is selling some courses that will teach you how to start a blog.
Since you really want to learn how to do it right away instead of just sifting through the free content online, you go ahead and buy an introductory course for $49.
And that my friends, is how many people online get their customers with their blog.
They create relevant, helpful content on their blog that will be found online.
With their content, they’re able to build trust and expertise by providing a library of free content.
If someone’s free content is amazing, then how would you predict their paid content will be like?
So if you are selling products and services, you’ll want to think about what blog posts you’ll want to have on your website, what questions your target customers will have, and what keywords will they use when they’re searching for a solution.
2. Using SEO and the right keywords will help you attract followers, brands and customers.
What is SEO? SEO stands for search engine optimization.
It’s writing blog posts in a way for the search engine to want to rank it higher in the search results.
Since Google and the other search engines rank everything based on an algorithm, you want to make sure your materials have a chance of showing up in the first few pages.
No one really knows exactly how the algorithm operates (except if you are a Google engineer or hacker) but there are well-known best practices that have been circulating around the internet to follow and use to your advantage.
If you think about it, you only usually get to the first few pages when you’re looking for something.
You probably click one of the top 5 search results first every time.
That’s because you trust that those are usually the best results.
Google wants to make sure that it’s delivering the best content to you so they have certain guidelines they use to choose which pages get those ultra-coveted spaces.
Some SEO guidelines include:
Your blog posts should have at least 300 words.
Many have said that the longer the better since usually this means that there’s more information and more value.
This is not always the case and the search engines will know if you’re just making the content longer than it has to be to try to rank higher.
So if you can add valuable information to a post, then do so. But don’t make them too long for the sake of it being just a longer post.
Blog posts with images do better since nobody likes a text-only post, especially if it’s a long one.
Blog posts with less lengthy paragraphs are ideal.
I use the Yoast SEO plugin on WordPress that provides an analysis of my post and tips to optimize it more. I highly recommend installing and using it every time you post as a guideline.
Many influencers get found by brands and agencies through Google.
If you have a blog with posts that are search engine-optimized, you're more likely to be found and approached!
Make sure you're using appropriate tags in your blog posts like "LA blogger" or "NYC food blogger" - the more specific the better!
3. Get leads through email opt-ins in your blog posts.
Through your blog posts, you can offer your readers a freebie or a lead magnet, which is something of value for them to give you their email address.
This can be anything from a mini e-book, guide, PDF, video series, etc. which they’ll want to download and you will get their email in return.
You can create your freebie or lead magnet by using office or graphic design software.
I like to use Canva, since it’s easy to use and they have a free version.
You’ll want your readers’ email so that you can add them to your mailing list and market to them in the future.
Most people have weekly email newsletters where they send out their most recent blog posts and videos and also offer their products and services.
You can offer these upgrades in your blog posts to grow your email list and potential customer base.
4. Grow your audience by cross-promoting other channels.
On your blog and in your blog posts, you can link over to your other channels.
You can have plugins for your social media channels, embed your YouTube videos and cross-promote your other platforms on your blog.
That way, if you have another platform that’s your main one, you can send people over there who found your blog through search engines like Google.
5. You can charge more for brand sponsorships by adding blog posts to your packages.
If you have a blog, you can provide more value when you work with brands.
Instead of offering one Instagram post, for example, you can offer them a blog post which will remain on your blog and will link over to your social channels.
Influencers can usually charge more for packages like these instead of one-off social media posts.
Make it a content campaign instead of just a post.
