How to Be More Confident on Camera

the spark show Sep 05, 2019

Welcome to The Spark Show! In this episode, I’ll be talking about HOW TO BE MORE CONFIDENT ON CAMERA.

As influencers, we need to be visible and show up for our audience. In this episode, I’ll be covering:

~ The 3 things you need to do to have more confidence on camera

~ The #1 shift you need to make when you’re putting yourself out there

~ My top 2 tips to make your on-camera experience better

First, here are the three things you need to do to have more confidence on camera.

Purpose

Have an intention for why you are going on-camera. If you’re going on Facebook or IG Live, what do you want to accomplish? Don’t just go LIVE to go LIVE.

You don’t have to have a big reason or event, it could just be to show them where you are or what’s happening behind-the-scenes but there should be a clear purpose and intention.

Preparation

Take the time to know what you’re going to say and create your main talking points. It’s best if you have bullet points or a list in front of you so you don’t forget.

Being prepared is key, so that you’re not rambling, going off topic, or just there for no reason. You want to make sure that you know your purpose and intention and prepare those points so you don’t miss anything.

Practice

The best way to be more confident is to practice. Remember when you first learned how to ride a bike or rollerblade? Same concept. At first, you’re shaky and you don’t really know what you’re doing but as you practice and do it more - you get better and better. You can’t expect to be really good at something the first time around - that’s the whole concept of experience.

Now let’s talk about the #1 shift you need to make when you’re putting yourself out there.

So first, why is it that you may not be confident on camera? And that’s because of fear. Most of the time, you’re scared of what people will think and say. You might be thinking, what people think about me? (I don’t like how I look, I sound weird, etc. - I’m not good enough)

You might be scared of being judged. The thing is, you’re already being judged - no matter what. That’s just the reality of it. It’s not wrong, people can’t help it. So wouldn’t you want to be judged for trying to do something good like delivering value? And helping others?

That’s part one of the shift. The second part is that while you’re worrying about how you look and sound, or how you may not be good enough, the bottom line is - it’s not about you. That may sound harsh, but the minute you accept that is the minute you’re free.

The shift that needs to happen is that you being on camera and putting yourself out there is not about you, it’s about your audience and the message they need to hear.

Does it matter what you look like if you just said something that changed someone’s life? Does it really matter what you sound like or what clothes you’re wearing if you made someone feel less sad, nervous, anxious or depressed?

Do you think someone would care about your video quality if you just said something that make a profound impact on their life?

Probably not. So you gotta stop caring so much and care more about the people you’re going to help vs what people are gonna think or say.

Lastly, here are my top 2 tips to make your on-camera experience better:

Lighting

If you can, use natural light when you’re on camera. Do this by facing a window or you can use a ring light. Go outside, be resourceful.

Tripod

If you’re using your phone, it’s fine to hold it but if you have a tripod or gimble that helps with the steadiness. Or you if you have a laptop or desktop you can have a webcam that just sits on it (I upgraded to a Logitech webcam for quality).

Hopefully that helps you to be more confident on camera. And really the bottom line here is to know that it’t not about you, it’s about the message you’re delivering and the person you’re talking to on the other side of the screen. And once you have that, it’ll be awesome!

Thanks for tuning into The Spark Show and I’ll see you in the next episode!
