My New Year's Resolutions for 2020

the spark show Dec 26, 2019

Welcome to The Spark Show! In this episode, I’ll be sharing with you my New Year’s resolutions for 2020. I’ll also share with you some common resolutions and how to actually achieve them.

We all know how it is. It’s the end of the year and people are reflecting on all the things they didn’t do. If you listened to Episode 58 and 59, then you were doing the opposite hopefully, and reflecting on your wins and accomplishments.

But for everyone else and for most people, they’re looking at: “I didn’t lose the weight I wanted to” or “I didn’t go to the gym as much” or “I spent too much money again” or “I didn’t take that trip that I said I was going to.”

Most of the time, at the end of the year, people are feeling pretty down on themselves so they’re looking at the New Year as a fresh start, a do-over, so they can actually achieve those things that they want to believe.

I actually think this is part of human nature that people are procrastinating until January 1st when the calendar starts. They want to do it collectively instead of starting today. It’s like at end of November or December, they’re giving themselves another month or couple of weeks to not do these things and instead wait.

I think it’s funny, because I do this too! We are human beings and that’s how we are! If you think about it, you can reset and restart today if you wanted to and not do it when everyone else is or wait til the calendar (whoever made that up) says so!

But anyways, so most New Year’s resolutions have to do with getting healthy (which is important all year-round and not just the beginning of the year), making more money (saving more/spending less), and either spending more time with friends and family. This could mean meeting new people, working on connections, or finding the right partner.

And then we create these resolutions and then usually we start off really, really good. It’s January 1st, we’re full speed ahead and doing really well. Day 1 is AWESOME, we’re pumped, we’re at the gym, meditating, doing all the things. Day 2 is great too, maybe Day 3. And then Day 4 or 5 or 6, becomes the hardest day of all. It’s like, you can’t. Your body can’t. You brain doesn’t want to. Maybe this happens later for you, Week 2, 3, or 4.

But if you do your research and ask most gyms, they’ll tell you that their highest enrollment and attendance is in January and then it kinda drops off and then picks up before summer when people wanna look good in their bikinis.

So why does this happen? Really it’s human behavior and psychology. Most people want these big, audacious goals which is a good thing, but they’re not sustainable if you’re trying to do all of them, all at once, all at the same time.

It’s really about building the habit and consistency that’s going to help you make these resolutions last.

So how do you build the habit and consistency?

Well first of all, you wanna know the reason WHY you have these goals. They have to be deep, meaningful reasons that compel you to take action or else it’s never going to happen. So the first thing you have to do after you write down your New Year’s resolutions is to ask yourself WHY you want to achieve it. And if that reason doesn’t get you out of bed, then it’s not gonna help you achieve your goal.

Then you have to actually set yourself up for success. If your goal is to go to the gym every day at 5am, you’re not going to stay out late and party. You’re not gonna binge-watch Netflix until 3am because that would be working against your goal.

If your goal is to eat healthy, that means scheduling time for grocery and meal prep. Not “stopping by” to eat cake - even though I love cake and taking that out of my diet is definitely not on my list of New Year’s resolutions.

Another strategy to stay consistent is to get support and accountability. This means working with a coach that will check on you and keep pushing you. I find that when I’m working with a coach and we have calls every week, I’m so productive because I don’t wanna show up saying I didn’t accomplish my goals.

You can also have an accountability buddy that has a similar goal that you check in with daily or weekly which will help motivate and inspire each other.

And then lastly, you want to celebrate your wins and reward yourself! Make sure you listen to Episode 58 where I talk in depth about why celebration is important. But definitely patting yourself on the back and rewarding yourself when you hit milestones is going to encourage you mentally and psychologically to keep going.

So now I’m going to share with you some of my resolutions:

  1. Take more time off - at least one full day per week
  2. Be strict with my daily morning routine
  3. Be active every single day - yoga, workout, hike, etc.
  4. Travel more!
  5. Work on my book

So I’m going to follow my own process that I just shared with you to make sure I achieve these goals - connect to purpose/WHY, set myself up for success, get support and accountability and then celebrate and reward myself!

I’d love to know what your New Year’s resolutions are! Tag me in your story @sparksociety_ and we’ll share and repost on Instagram.

That’s if for this episode! Thank you so much for listening and I’ll see you in the next one!
