Goodbye Excuses

the spark show Dec 30, 2019

Hey there, welcome to The Spark Show! In this episode, I’m going to help you say goodbye to those excuses that we’re all guilty of saying. They’re the ones that stop us from moving forward and achieving success. It’s really gotta stop, especially now that we’re moving into a new year, new decade.

First of all, the first step to anything is awareness. So I want you to think of all the excuses you tell yourself on a regular basis. Just think of the ones you used recently. Here are some of the most common ones: “I don’t have time” or “I don’t have money” or “I don’t know how to X”

Yes, you know the ones. They are the ones that are stopping you from what you want.

For example, some of you want to start a business or grow your business. What are the excuses that come up? “I don’t have time to work on my business” or “I don’t have the money to invest in my business.”

So you really have to ask yourself - What do I really want? Because if you want something and you want to achieve it, then you have to decide if this is what you really want to do or not. Now if this is what you really want, then it’s time to stop with the excuses. It’s like you’re working against yourself.

So identify all the excuses that you make to yourself. Once you have that down, you can start to shift and reframe it into something else.

For example: I want to grow my Instagram following.

Excuse: I don’t have time to post or I don’t know how to take good picture.

Reframe: I have time for what’s important to me or I’m going to be the best Instagram photographer and practice taking photos

So you see, you get to decide what your words and thoughts are. And your thoughts are powerful. They create your reality! So choose them carefully.

The thing is, the excuses for time and money all come from the same lack in clarity of priorities. For some reason, we all have time to sleep, eat, shower, brush our teeth? Why? Because it’s important to us, it’s become a part of our routine, it’s a part of who we are.

Some people find it easy to work out and be active every day, they’ve made it a part of their routine. But for some, it’s a struggle - most of the time it’s because it’s not on their “important” list and it’s not something they add as part of their schedule.

For example: I don’t have money to invest in my business.

But let’s look at the proof: maybe you have money for a new iPhone, laptop, new car, or clothes. So you do have the money, but you decide to spend it on things that are important to you. This means your business is not a priority (or at least high enough of a priority) for you to decide where the money goes.

If your business is a priority, then you will adjust your budget accordingly to invest money in your business.

If you’re still making excuses, then that means a change has to be made with your priorities.

Let’s talk about the next common excuse: “I don’t know how to X”

That can totally be true. For example, “I don’t know how to play the trumpet.”

If I decided that it’s important for me to play the trumpet, then that opens up the door to my options: Do I wanna try to learn on my own through YouTube? Do I hire a trumpet teacher? How good do I want to get? How many hours will I practice every single day?

So as you see, you get to decide what’s important to you and how important it is.

Make that decision first, because without knowing that, you will continue to give yourself these excuses that are just going to keep you stuck.

Clarity comes from taking action. And usually taking action means deciding and committing to whatever it is you really want to do.

So what do you wanna do? Really sit down and figure that out. Episode 12 is all about getting clear on your big vision and that can help you decide what it is you want to accomplish. You can also listen to Episode 17 Success Defined where you can define what success means for you.

That’s it for this episode! It’s our last one of the year. Thanks for listening to the Spark Show and I’ll see you in 2020!
